What Happens In Spring

What happens in spring is that the winter snow starts to thaw. In the Northern Hemisphere spring takes place from March to May. In the Southern Hemisphere it occurs from September to November.

Indicators of Spring Season

The most conspicuous signs are plants and flowers blooming. Spring is also noted for the resumption of animal activities, many of which go into hibernation during the winter season.

Another sign that it is spring is the smell of the soil. It has a unique scent, brought about by temperature changes. The temperature change means surface is now ripe for flora to grow.

(Note: It has been observed that what happens in spring, including the major indicators, now occur a few days earlier than usual. The reason for the season creep -which affects all the seasons- has yet to be determined.)

Flowers Bloom and Birds Sing

As plants start to blossom, so do the flowers begin to bloom. The emergence of flowers leads to increased activity by birds. For this reason, images of springtime have become associated with birds chirping while flying over blooming and colorful flowers. With winter behind, the birds can be heard chirping through the night.

Weather

Springtime is also marked by some rain showers and thunderstorms. Depending on the area, some snow may be left over. The temperature will start going up again. As this happens, the remaining snow and ice melt.

Season of Rebirth

The ancient peoples often viewed spring as a time of rebirth or renewal. It should not be surprising if one looks at how events unfold.

What happens in spring is that buds on plants begin to appear as the snow melts. At the same time, new green leaves emerge on plants that appear to have died during the winter. Grass starts to grow on lawns and gardens.

As stated earlier, flowers of all colors and shapes begin to blossom. If you look at your garden you’ll see not just birds, but bees, insects and colorful butterflies all around.

In the animal kingdom, the birds can be seen flying or returning home. You’ll also hear frogs and see baby animals start frolicking again.

Human Activities at Springtime

Picnics take place a lot during this season. What happens in spring is that the days become warmer with some strong winds too. This combination makes it an ideal time to go to parks. The longer days also help of course.

A stroll along the neighborhood will reveal other common spring activities. This includes plucking wild flowers and flying kites. Kids play in muddy puddles or playgrounds. Outdoor sports also take during this time.

Among the most popular are biking and rollerblading. Other outdoor activities are baseball and jumping rope. Caring for the garden also takes place at this time.

Perhaps the ancients were right; a lot of what happens in spring, be it animal or human activity, can be likened to a rebirth. After the dead cold of winter, spring becomes a symbol of life. It is a new beginning and one that is vibrant.
